Fitness for August 2015

This month I have been working out using my P90X3 workout again.  I think this is my third time doing the program.  I am not actually doing the whole entire 13 week schedule like I did back in Jan to April 2014 but I am using P90X3 about four times a week and doing my own yoga routines a couple other days of the week.  I have found it to be a great schedule for August.

As you can see from the above photo my faithful workout buddy – my cat – is really into P90X3 and using the bands.

workout cat - loves weights

On another workout day he was into snuggling with my weights.  At one point he was actually laying over the top of them stretched out but he moved before I could get his picture.  He never misses a morning workout with me.

One of the things I love about P90X3 is that all the workouts are 30 minutes long and there is a lot of variety.  There is cardio, cardio with weights, weight training, isometric exercises, kickboxing, yoga and even pilates.  You do not get bored with these dvd’s.

The reason I chose to only do them four days a week instead of six like on the program is because I wanted to either ride my bike or do yoga on off days which is what i did.

I have also been making my own bread a lot lately.  One of my sons wanted me to make cinnamon rolls so I found a cinnamon bread recipe instead from my Make Ahead Bread book and it turned out really well.  My son really likes it too and I have made it two or three times now – it makes a large loaf.  cinnamon bread from make ahead bread book

As I mentioned in a previous post on baking homemade bread  this book has a neat concept that makes baking homemade bread very simple.  You make your dough ahead of time, like the night before, and refrigerate the loaf, get it out in the morning and bake it for like an hour and you have the best loaf of bread ever.  I have used many recipes from the book, a lot of them are whole grain types of recipes, and they have turned out well.  This cinnamon roll bread was another success.

water line redone, photos of trench

We had some homeowner issues this past month.  We discovered back at the end of July that we had a water line leak since we had a terribly high water bill.  We had to do a lot of investigating and my husband had to do a lot of digging around but we discovered two leaks in our front yard – one up by the house, the shut off box and one by the water main by the street.

Well, lots of money later we now have a whole new water line installed thanks to Legacy Plumbing.  It was about a four day process though to get the leak accessed and a temporary fix, get the permit, have a professional digging company come and hand dig the trench you see in the above photo and then another day for the plumber to come and do the whole line.

There was one day when this first happened that we did not have water for about 24 hours.  You don’t realize how much you need and use water.  I went to the store and bought gallon jugs for us to use to brush teeth, wash hands and dishes and we bought bottled drinking water.  It makes you really appreciate having running water in the house.

I will say that Legacy Plumbing was a great company to use and if you live in my area of Plano, Texas and need a plumber call them.  They are very fast to respond and do a very professional job and their plumbers are friendly and knowledgeable.  We also used them back in May to get a new hot water heater – lots of plumbing issues for us this year.

Well, my boys are back in school now -this was their first week so things are busy around here again – actually they are always busy but now there is more of a routine to things.  I was kind of sad to see their summer break end but it is nice to have the house be a little quieter during the day again.

I hope you are able to get some workouts in for the fall.  I am planning to use some of my workout books for the month of September.

Have a great weekend!

Working Out Week 43 of 2014

This week I switched up my workouts and chose to do my Exhale Core Fusion dvd’s and some Shiva Rea yoga.  This was also a really busy week with a lot going on so I feel like the workouts I chose to do worked well with my schedule.

  • Monday – Exhale Core Fusion – Abs & Arms – 40 min,
  • Tuesday – yoga in evening – 15 min.
  • Wednesday – Exhale Core Fusion – Lean and Toned – 20 min.
  • Thursday – Shiva Rea Surf Yoga Soul – 30 min.
  • Friday – Exhale Core Fusion – Body Sculpt – 40 min.
  • Saturday – Shiva Rea Surf Yoga Soul – 20 min.

Workout Cat

Here is the cat – all ready to workout on Wednesday morning.  He was scared to get on the new rug I bought in the past but he seems to be okay with it now.

ECF Lean Toned workout

I had not done the Lean and Toned dvd in a while.  I really like this workout.  I only had a few minutes to workout that morning but 20 minutes of this dvd was awesome!  The core pretzel part that I did really worked deep into some core and glute muscles that had me feeling it well into the next day.

Shiva Rea Surf Yoga Soul

The yoga dvd I used this week was Shiva Rea’s Surf Yoga Soul.  I think this was actually one of the first of her yoga dvd’s I ever bought.  I have not used it in a while and forgot what great yoga sequences are on this program.  As you can see my cat really likes her dvd, too.  He didn’t even want to move off the mat at the beginning as seen in the one photo of me bending over him.

I also created a new smoothie this week.  It is a “green” smoothie and I thought it had a really good flavor to it.  I also felt quite energized after drinking it.  Below is the smoothie and the recipe:

Kiwi Lime Smoothie

I am also continuing to make juices in my juicer and try to drink one or two per day.  I have found that the juices or the green smoothies are a perfect mid afternoon snack that give me energy.  One of my knitting friends has also now pulled out her old juicer and bought the same juicing book I bought and mentioned in my post last week – Juicing.  You can read more about that book and a few of the recipes I have made from it in my Week 42 workout post.

This week I am not going to do my Fitness Tips.  To be honest with you I have not prepared anything for that part of my post that I have been doing lately and I am too tired to think of something right now.  We spent half the day over in Fort Worth at the Alliance Air show that my husband wanted to attend.  It was nice and we saw some neat planes and planes flying and doing tricks.  Today was very hot here though for October and the heat made the whole event less pleasant – and there was not a cloud in the sky today (which is good for an air show) or a speck of shade to stand in at the air field.  I am glad we got to go though and spend time together as a family.

Have a great weekend!

Working Out Week 23 of 2014

Wow – the first week of June has already gone by.  This past week was also the last week of school for my kids and now they are on their summer vacation.  I am looking forward to having a less hectic schedule with them being out of school for a while.  I also try and do a little more variety in my summer workout schedule, more outdoor activities like biking and swimming.  This past week I began my outdoor workout activities by adding in some biking and outdoor yoga.

  • Monday 6-2 – Amy Bento Ross Body Box dvd Short & Sweaty premix – 50 min
  • Tuesday 6-3 – Ride Bike – 22 min + Exercise-Medicine ball magazine routine – 15 min
  • Wednesday 6-4 – 21 Day Yoga Challenge Magazine routine – Go With the Flow – 20 min
  • Thursday 6-5 – Amy Bento Ross – Body Box dvd  All Cardio premix – 52 min
  • Friday 6-6 – Ride Bike – 22 min + magazine routine – 15 min
  • Saturday 6-7 – 21 Day Yoga Challenge Magazine routine – Sitting Pretty routine – 20 min

This past week I did a routine of cardio, biking + toning exercises, and yoga.  I really liked this schedule as it was a change from my normal dvd routine or doing an exercise book.  I also took it outdoors with the biking and I even did my two days of yoga out on my back patio at 6:45 am.  It was nice and peaceful outside in the early morning and a great way to begin my day.

I did use one dvd this week.  It is actually a new dvd that I bought about six weeks ago and had not done it yet.  It got pushed aside when I decided to do the Betty Rocker Spring Challenge in May.  The dvd is called Body Box by Amy Bento Ross.  I have a couple of her older kickboxing and weight training dvd’s and thought I would enjoy this one, too.  So far after using it twice this week I am not sure if I like it as well as I like her older Kickbox Xtreme dvd.  It is a good overall cardio workout but some of the routines are kind of hard to keep up with for me.  There are intervals that can be done between kickboxing combos and I really like those intervals – they are body weight type of exercises.  Overall it is a good workout but I think you need to have kickboxing experience to keep up – I do but it is still not easy to get all the combos down the first time.  I guess that is true for a lot of new advanced type of workout dvd’s though.  I usually have to do them a few times to figure out all the moves.

I really enjoyed riding my bike a couple of times this past week on my neighborhood route that I do.  I wore my sport watch and set the stopwatch and it takes me about 22 to 23 minutes to do the route – I am not sure how far it is.  I try and ride at least half of it in my hardest gear which is 3 since I have a 3 speed bike.   When I got home from the ride I would do a routine from my binder of fitness routines I have ripped out of magazines I have subscribed to over the last 10 years.  I have them organized in a 3-ring binder and divided with tabs as to the type of workouts.  I have not used them in a while and got a couple of them out this past week.  One of them was with an exercise ball, a medicine ball plus weights and the other was total body toning with 8 and 5 pound weights.

As you can see my workout buddy was present for the exercise ball routine.  When not exercising he likes to sit on the exercise mat bag as seen in the other photo.

I also made a couple of more salads this week with some green leaf and romaine lettuce I grew in our little garden out back.  This is only the second time I have tried to grow lettuce and the first time at actually being successful at it.  The first time a lot of bugs got to it before we did so we didn’t get very much.  It is really nice to be able to go out back and pick some lettuce for a salad to go with dinner.

This past week I also preordered the new Cathe Friedrich dvd’s that are to be released in the fall.  The new series is called Ripped with Hiit.  All of the workouts are high intensity interval training and if you preorder you get free shipping, too.  You can read more about it on her site Cathe.com if you are interested.  I have used her workouts for years and they are all great and worth the money.

I hope everyone had a great week!  Let me know what your workout plans are for the week coming up by clicking on Leave a Reply.
