Working Out Week 48 of 2014

This post is a couple of days later than usual.  The reason being I was on the road all day Saturday – my normal post day – driving from Georgia back to Texas.   Normally we stay home for the Thanksgiving holiday but decided to go visit family this year.

I still managed to get in some yoga workouts during my week in Georgia.  I took some Shiva Rea dvd’s with me and some yoga sequences from Yoga Journal magazine that I have saved.  One problem I ran into though was we got halfway there and I remembered I that I didn’t pack my yoga mat – so a trip to Walmart once we got close to our destination and got a new yoga mat.  I kind of needed one anyhow as the one I have is a couple of years old and the other mat I use for workouts with shoes is VERY old.

Workouts the week of Thanksgiving were:

  • Monday – yoga in evening – 10 min
  • Tuesday – Shiva Rea AM Energy Vira Flow – 23 min.
  • Wednesday – Shiva Rea Daily Energy Chakra Namaskar + Core – 29 min.
  • Thursday – Yoga Shine On sequence from Yoga Journal magazine – 15 min.
  • Friday – Yoga Light Up sequence from Yoga Journal magazine – 15 min.
  • Saturday – off – travel day

Since I was not at home and did not have my tripod I didn’t take any workout photos.

It was very enjoyable to do yoga the entire week and I might alternate doing that every other week for the month of December.  I notice the yoga really helps calm you and deal with stress better – of course I know this since I have done yoga for over ten years but actually practicing it for an entire week where you were traveling and dealing with different surroundings and family members I could tell it helped me mentally.

One thing I did take photos of was our trip to Senoia, Georgia to see the little town where they film the TV series The Walking Dead.  The town is a really cute little country town that has this small downtown area where there is a Walking Dead store that sells Walking Dead merchandise.    In the basement of the store there are actual set props from various scenes of the show.  So, I will be sharing those photos below of our visit to the town with my family.

Weekly Fitness Tip:      Pack healthy snacks and foods when traveling for the holidays

– If going on a long road trip pack at least one meal – like lunch – so you know it is healthy.  For example a salad in a portable salad container.  I did this for our long drive to Georgia from Texas and used one of the reusable Take Out containers I bought at Aldi over a month ago.  It even has a salad dressing holder and the containers did not leak.

Containers from Aldi - perfect for traveling and packing a salad

– Pack healthy snacks like trail mix or nuts and dried fruit

– Bring some fruit like apples or bananas or even cut up pineapple (I have done that before and did it this time as well)

– When stopping to eat choose a grilled sandwich with NO fries or a grilled chicken salad

– Have lots of water packed in a cooler and avoid soft drinks or sugary drinks.  Store water in the trunk or under a seat that will not fit in the cooler and add it when the cooler gets low.

With some planning and using some self control you can travel and still stick to a somewhat healthy diet.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the photos of the Walking Dead store that we visited.  If you are ever in that area of Georgia I would say it is worth stopping by the little town – especially if you are a Walking Dead fan.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving last week and is having a great start to the first week of December.

Working Out Week 31 of 2014

This week was a shorter workout week for me.  We went on a three day trip down to San Antonio, Texas to see the Alamo and stay in the Riverwalk area and do a few things with the kids before school starts back.  It was a nice trip and a beautiful area but I am also thankful and glad to be back and home and in a routine.

My workouts this week were:

  • Monday – Ride Bike + Yoga – 38 min.
  • Tuesday – off – driving to San Antonio – walking once got there to Alamo and 1 mile to eat dinner
  • Wednesday – a lot of walking around San Antonio
  • Thursday – off – driving back from trip
  • Friday – Jari Love – Ripped and Chiseled workout – 40 min
  • Saturday – Ride Bike + Yoga – 33 min.

The middle of the week I didn’t do any set or scheduled workouts but I did a lot of walking on Tuesday and Wednesday around the Riverwalk in San Antonio.  We stayed right down on the Riverwalk so everything was close by and in walking distance.  The first day there we walked down to The Alamo which was about two or three blocks away and I think we had to walk almost a mile one way to eat dinner that night.  Lots of complaints from the kids on that one but I told them this way we could walk off our dinner on the way back to the hotel.

Alamo Mug and beads from trip to San Antonio

The photo above is of the mug I got from the Alamo gift shop and the beads I got in the clearance bin for $2.00 a strand at a little shop in the other direction from our hotel.  The shops were called the Shops of LaVillita and they were these cute small little boutiques and art galleries that you don’t see in the mall or just on any street corner.  I thought I would make some knitting stitch markers with the beads or maybe a bracelet.  I really like the mug as it is a nice shape and I like the art work and wording on it – it says Remember the Alamo on the bottom and the year 1836 on the mug and the handle.

My son and his new hat from LaVillita Shops in San Antonio

The two photos above are of me and my oldest son – this was our little shopping trip to the Shops at LaVillita on Wednesday.  He found this hat in one of the shops and wanted it.  I told him he could get it if he intended to wear it more than twice.  He says he will.  He is driving now so I told him it could be his driving hat.  The other photo is of me in front of this pretty little fountain in front of a quaint cafe.  I wanted to take my sons photo in front of the fountain but getting him to have his picture taken is difficult.  I barely got the one in the hat.  He will probably be mortified when I tell him I put it on my blog…

The above photos are of the Riverwalk area.  It is really neat how all of these hotels, restaurants and shops are on either side of the river.  You can take a river boat tour which takes you on a 30 or 40 minute ride with a guide but we didn’t end up going on that.  My one son observed that it might be costly for the five of us and also the boats don’t go very fast and you could probably walk along side one and hear what the guide says, is what one of my 13 year old son’s told me.  He is kind of right.  I really enjoyed just walking the area and seeing the ducks and other birds and all of the green foliage that borders the sides of the river.  It is pretty open and easy to get around during the day but it gets pretty crowded in the evening with everyone going to eat at the restaurants.

Jari Love Ripped Workout

So back to the regular routine of workouts on Friday.  I decided to do an older Jari Love workout that is called Ripped and Chiseled.  It is a weight training workout and it is very high reps.  I had forgotten how hard this one is and the results you feel later on in the day and the next day, too.  The whole dvd is about 60 minutes and I choose to do about 40 minutes of it.  The reps are high but you don’t get too bored with the exercises because she varies the count and does single, 2 -2 count, 3 and 1 count and 4 and 1 count.  My legs, arms and upper back are feeling this today.

I have decided that with my weekly workout post I am going to start including some tips for success in working out on your own, or anywhere really.  These are tips from me, a real person and mother of three sons – I am not nor have I ever been a professional fitness trainer or belonged to a gym.  I just choose to be healthy and workout and do my workouts at home – on my own – making my own schedule.

Fitness Tip for the Week – Commit to exercising starting now!

-Schedule you workouts for at least 4 days per week for 30 minutes or more per day and you will see results – maybe not overnight but within 3 to 4 weeks.

-Start out small in the beginning – just go out for a walk or ride your bike or do some stretches or yoga.  There are lots of free videos on You Tube or you can go to your local library and check out dvd’s or books on working out – that is how I started out years ago – by utilizing what my library had to offer.  There are also lots of great routines and information on workouts on pinterest.

Well, I hope everyone is having a good weekend.  It looks like it is going to be a pretty nice day here today so I may be doing some swimming this afternoon for a little extra workout.

Have a great weekend!

Working Out Week 11 of 2014

The past week I was on vacation for Spring break with my family and we traveled to Destin, FL to see my parents and then traveled to Ashburn, GA to see my husband’s family.  I took the P90X3 workout dvd’s, my exercise mat and my exercise bands with me so I could stay on track with my workout schedule and not get behind.  I am proud to say I worked out every morning of our vacation with the exception of Saturday, since we had a 15 hour car trip back to Texas.  I am going to try and fit that workout in today, Sunday, to make up for not doing it on Saturday.

This past week the schedule was as follows:

  • Monday – MMX
  • Tuesday – Decelerator
  • Wednesday – Triometrics
  • Thursday – Pilates X
  • Friday – Decelerator
  • Saturday – CVX

Since we were out of town I was not able to take any photos the past week of the workouts.  I did take photos of our trip though.  Me&MomDestin,FL 2014 Kimberlees KornerThe weather was nice enough in Destin the first couple of days that we were able to enjoy a little time on the beach.  The above photo was taken by one of my twin sons of me and my mom sitting in a gazebo by the ocean.

Small Shark at Gulfarium Kimberlees Korner

Hammerhead at Gulfarium Kimberlees Korner

We also went to the Gulfarium and saw a dolphin show and some of the other features in the various tanks around the place.  They had a shark moat but it was kind of dark in there so I was not able to get any good photos of the larger sharks.  I was able to get a couple in the other tanks of a smaller shark and a hammerhead as seen in the above photos.

I am really pleased that I was able to maintain the workout schedule even though we were out of town.  I brought the dvd’s and my laptop so I was able to workout where I could find room and thankfully at the condo in Destin there was a nice TV with a blueray player and enough floor space to workout.  The workouts only take 30 minutes of your time so it was easy to just get up and get it done – just like I do when I am at home.  I will say I did not get up quite as early since I had to consider the other people around me in the small place we stayed in.  At my in-laws in Georgia I was able to get up at pretty much my regular time since they operate a farm and are early risers.  I would take my laptop into their spare living room and use the dvd’s on there to workout.  My oldest son was sleeping in there on the pull out couch so I did kind of wake him up but he is a teenager and just put a pillow over his head and went back to sleep.  He wasn’t too interested in getting up and working out with me.

Eating a healthy diet while traveling is always a challenge.  I tried to plan ahead on the drive over there and had healthy snacks and even packed our lunch so we didn’t have to stop for fast food for lunch and dinner, only dinner.   When we did stop for a meal during the whole trip I tried to make healthy choices and get a grilled sandwich, no fries and a water to drink.  It is possible to eat fast food and not overeat if you are careful about your choices.  I am looking forward to getting back on track this week though with cooking healthy meals at home and will be planning my menu today and probably shopping today or tomorrow since we don’t have much food in the house.

Well, I hope everyone is having a nice month of March so far.  I will update again at the end of the week on week 11 of P90X3 – only a few weeks left in the program.
